Overview of WeCP’s Spoken English Assessment

The WeCP English Communication Skill Assessment involves candidates answering sets of predefined questions. These questions are presented in the form of text, image or video and candidate needs to submit a video response ensuring that candidates can showcase their speaking abilities in real-time. Once candidates submit their video responses, the evaluation process is carried out in real-time by WeCP AI.

Evaluation Parameters

The AI system evaluates the video responses across 6 key parameters to provide a comprehensive assessment of the candidate’s English communication skills. These parameters are:

Based on the overall score, candidates are categorized into one of four proficiency levels:

1. Basic English Speaker

  • Definition: Speakers at this level can use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. They can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details like where they live, people they know, and things they have.

  • Capabilities:

    • Can engage in very simple and direct exchanges of information on familiar topics.

    • Can introduce themselves and others using simple sentences.

    • Can ask and answer questions about personal details such as names, age, and address.

    • May rely on repetition and rephrasing to communicate effectively.

  • Example Situation: Greeting someone, introducing oneself, asking for and giving basic directions, ordering food in a restaurant.

2. Conversational English Speaker

Speaking:

  • Definition: Speakers at this level can deal with simple, straightforward information and begin to express themselves in familiar contexts. They can handle basic communication in their field.

  • Capabilities:

    • Can participate in simple and routine conversations requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities.

    • Can express basic needs and preferences in familiar contexts.

    • Can describe their background, immediate environment, and simple aspects of their day-to-day life.

    • May still make errors but can be generally understood by native speakers used to dealing with non-native speakers.

  • Example Situation: Discussing daily routines, making small talk about familiar topics like hobbies, describing simple work tasks, and asking for and providing basic information in social settings.

3. Fluent English Speaker

Speaking:

  • Definition: Speakers at this level can understand and express themselves on a range of familiar topics regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. They can produce connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.

  • Capabilities:

    • Can express ideas and thoughts fluently and spontaneously without much searching for expressions.

    • Can handle most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken.

    • Can engage in detailed discussions on familiar topics and provide descriptions and explanations of opinions and plans.

    • Can produce connected and coherent speech on a range of topics, though with occasional minor errors that do not hinder overall communication.

  • Example Situation: Participating in meetings, giving presentations on familiar topics, engaging in social interactions, and discussing personal interests and experiences in detail.

4. Native English Speaker

Speaking:

  • Definition: Speakers at this level can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.

  • Capabilities:

    • Can speak fluently and accurately in any situation, using appropriate tone, style, and register.

    • Can handle complex interactions with ease, including debates, negotiations, and persuasive arguments.

    • Can produce clear, well-structured speech on complex subjects, demonstrating a high level of coherence and cohesion.

    • Can use idiomatic expressions and cultural references naturally and appropriately.

    • Can engage in detailed and nuanced conversations on a wide range of topics, showing a deep understanding of the language's subtleties.

  • Example Situation: Leading professional meetings, giving academic lectures, participating in in-depth discussions on specialized topics, and engaging in any form of high-level communication.
