What is Device Control?

The Device Control setting allows you to choose whether candidates can access a test or interview on:

  • Desktop / Laptop (Computer)

  • Mobile devices (Phones)

  • Both

If you want to restrict candidates from using mobile devices, you can do so with this setting.

How to configure Device Control

Device Control is available under the Integrity & Experience settings while creating or editing a test.

To configure Device Control:

  1. Open your test

  2. Go to Integrity & Experience

  3. Locate the Device Control section

  4. Review or update the selected device option

Depending on the test setup, Device Control may be pre-selected automatically to ensure candidates use a supported device.

For new tests

When you create a new test, Device Control is enabled by default under the Integrity & Experience tab.

  • The default selection is Take the test only on computers

  • This is the recommended setting to ensure full compatibility across all question types and integrity features

You can change this setting if your test supports mobile devices.

For existing tests

For existing tests, Device Control is automatically set based on the questions and integrity features already used in the test.

Existing tests that support mobile devices

If an existing test:

  • Contains only mobile-supported question types (such as MCQs or MCAs)

  • Does not include coding, programming, or work-sample questions

  • Uses minimal or no advanced proctoring or integrity features

Then Device Control is set by default to:

Take the test on computers and mobile devices

This means candidates can continue taking the test on both devices without any change to current behavior.

Existing tests that support only computer

If an existing test includes any features that are not supported on mobile, Device Control is automatically set to: Take the test only on computers

This applies when the test includes, for example:

  • Programming, database, data science, DevOps, or project-based questions

  • Work sample questions that require file uploads

  • Sherlock AI or advanced proctoring features

  • Full-screen enforcement, screen recording, or advanced screen tracking

Restricting the test to computers ensures candidates have a stable and reliable test experience.

As mention, some question types and integrity features don’t support mobile devices. In such cases, Device Control is automatically set to computer only.
